The gist of it is that you can only lose so much karma per comment or (was it per comment thread). So even if you hit -5000 downvotes or something you’re only going to lose a fraction of that. That is, reddit seems to have a limit on the number you can lose, or reddit disregards most downvotes in terms of total karma.
Do Downvotes affect karma?
